The river is open year-round. The best months for calm water are May through September. Winter brings heavier rains, which can cause trail mud or temporary flash flood closures.
Always check conditions before paddling. Flash floods can cause river and stream levels to rise rapidly.

Planning questions
What should I wear to kayak the Wailua River?
Wear a bathing suit under light, quick-drying clothing. Bring sturdy water shoes that strap to your feet. Do not wear flip-flops, as the trails are notoriously muddy.
Can you drive to Wailua Falls?
Yes. Wailua Falls is easily viewed from the roadside parking area at the end of Maʻalo Road. No hiking is required to see it.
What is the best time of day to kayak the Wailua River?
Launch early in the morning, before 10:00 AM. This helps secure parking and avoids afternoon trade winds that make the return paddle harder.
